La Cala Golf Europe
La Cala Golf Europe on the Costa del Sol Golf was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous and the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses giving a welcome relief for the more modest golfer. They are not severely contoured but are well bunkered and will be easier for the average golfer.
La Cala Golf Europe is a par 71 course measuring 6014 metres in length.
La Cala Golf Europe is different from the other two courses because of the river Ojen. There are three good challenges and none is over long. Yet they are all very different in character.
Cabell B. Robinson the designer is one of the best regarded course designers in Europe. He worked with the legendary Robert Trent Jones in the USA from 1967 until 1970 when he was appointed to head up the Trent Jones operation in Europe. In September 1987, Cabell left Mr Jonesī office to establish his own design practice.
His first projects were the La Cala Golf South and North courses. During the ensuing years he has continued to work throughout the Mediterranean and the rest of Europe.
The Ojen river plays a part in eight holes, cutting across three fairways. There is one main bridge that measures 45 metres and four smaller bridges over the river. The design also features four tunnels for golf carts and maintenance machinery. In total there are concrete golf cart paths measuring 20,000 m2.
The most distinctive factors of La Cala Golf Europe are the 14th which is at the maximum limit of what is allowed for a par 3 at 233 metres, and the 11th which is the longest hole on the course, this par 5 measures 524 metres in length.
